Arzell Hill (September 30, 1935 – April 27, 1984), known as Z. Z. Hill (pronounced "Zee Zee...") was an American blues singer best known for his recordings in the 1970s and early 1980s, including his 1982 album for Malaco Records, Down Home, which stayed on the Billboard soul album chart for nearly two years. The track "Down Home Blues" has been called the best-known blues song of the 1980s. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Hill "devised a combination of blues and contemporary soul styling and helped to restore the blues to modern black consciousness."

Zhané (pronounced Jah-Nay) was an American R&B/hip hop soul duo, best known for their 1993 hit "Hey Mr. D.J.", which reached No. 6 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Other popular hits include "Groove Thang" (U.S. No. 17) and minor hit "Sending My Love," both released in 1994. The group was part of Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit collective.

Zapp (also known as the Zapp Band or Zapp & Roger) is an American funk band that emerged from Hamilton, Ohio, in 1977. Particularly influential in the electro subgenre of funk, Zapp served as partial inspiration toward the creation of the G-funk sound of hip-hop popular on the West Coast of the United States in the early to mid 1990s, with many of their songs sampled by numerous hip-hop artists. The original line-up consisted of four brothers—Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, Lester Troutman and Terry Troutman—and non-Troutman family members Bobby Glover and Gregory Jackson. The group received attention in the early 1980s for implementing heavy use of the talk-box, which became one of their most well known characteristics. Zapp worked closely with members George Clinton and Bootsy Collins of the band Parliament-Funkadelic during its early stages, their support being a factor in the group gaining a record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1979. Zapp released its eponymous debut album in 1980, having a P-funk reminiscent sound as a result of Clinton's and Collin's input on the production. Zapp achieved most of its mainstream recognition from the single "More Bounce to the Ounce" from the same album, now widely regarded as a classic example of early 1980s electronic funk. The following year in 1981, Clinton stopped producing the band over a record dispute regarding Roger Troutman's solo debut. Zapp continued to produce several more albums thereafter, releasing Zapp II in 1982. The album's musical style veered drastically away from their first release; despite this, the album sold well, and was certified gold by late 1982.

Zakiya Shalai Cox (née Munnerlyn), (born April 22, 1977) in Hillside, New Jersey, was an American R&B/soul singer who released a self-titled studio album on DV8 Records in 1997. Two singles from the album, "Love Like Mine" and "My Love Won't Fade Away", entered Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. She is retired from the music business and currently (as of 2012) owns a flowershop in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Known as Yuna is a Malaysian singer-songwriter and businesswoman. Born and raised in Kedah, she began writing songs at age 14. She soon taught herself to play guitar, and by 2006, in need of a creative outlet while attending law school, performed for an audience for the first time.

Y?N-Vee (Pronounced: why envy) was an American female R&B/Hip hop group that formed in the early 1990s as the first act on PMP Records, who by 1994 linked a deal with the RAL division of Def Jam Music Group. PMP would later find success with R&B artist Montell Jordan in the following year.

Yasmeen Sulieman is an American singer born in Oakland, California and raised in Hawaii. She has toured with the musical Little Shop of Horrors and has appeared on the UPN series Half & Half. Sulieman was signed to Magic Johnson's record label, Magic Johnson Music/MCA Records in 2002 and released a single titled Blue Jeans (produced by Jazze Pha) which reached #97 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #53 on the R&B chart. Her debut album, "When Will It Be Me" was released in the Japan later that year after plans for a U.S. release were shelved.

Yarbrough and Peoples was an American R&B duo from Dallas, Texas. Their biggest selling release was "Don't Stop the Music," a US Billboard R&B chart topper in 1981.

Ericka Yancey is an American R&B singer who signed to RCA Records in 1996. Her debut album Ericka was slated to be released in 1997, but was ultimately shelved after her lead singles, "So Good" and "Wait a While", failed to make an entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and underperformed on the US R&B charts. In 1998 she recorded a duet with R&B singer TQ.

Xscape was a female American R&B quartet which began as a quintet. The group had 3 consecutive Platinum albums along with 6 top 10 hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100 during the 1990s including "Just Kicking it", "Understanding," "Who Can I Run To", "Keep On, Keepin' On", "The Arms of the One Who Loves You", and "My Little Secret". The original lineup of the group consisted of sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, and Tamera Coggins, though Coggins departed the group before their debut album was released.

X-Quisite was an R&B Canadian girl group. The trio made up of Nicole Holness, Melanie Fiona Hallim, Andreena Mill and later in 2003 new member, Nirvana Savoury was signed to Warner Music (Canada) soon after the group was established in 2002. The group released their self-titled debut studio album X-Quisite in 2003. In 2004, Juno Awards, an equivalent of Canadian Grammies, the band was nominated as one of five finalists for "R&B/Soul Recording of the Year" for the album X-Quisite. The group had a number of singles from the album, notably "Bad Girl" and "No Regrets" The group disbanded in 2005, with all three members moving on to having solo music careers.

Ketara Shavonne "Keke" Wyatt (born March 10, 1982) is an American recording artist. After performing in a number of girl bands and working as a songwriter in her teenage years, in 2001 she came to national attention after a successful collaboration with R&B singer Avant, and in 2002, her rendition of "Nothing in This World" led to a nomination for Best New R&B/Soul/Rap Artist at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. After a number of charting collaborations and solo releases, in 2012 she was cast in the TV One's R&B Divas which features the lives of five 1990s chart-topping R&B singers. She was featured in the following two seasons as well, performing with the group at events such as Essence Music Festival.

Wright was born in the small town of Hahira, Georgia, one of three children and the daughter of a minister and the musical director of their church. She started singing gospel music and playing piano in church as a child, and also became interested in jazz and blues.

Jack Leroy "Jackie" Wilson, Jr. (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984) was an American soul singer-songwriter and performer. A tenor with a four octave vocal range, he was nicknamed "Mr. Excitement", and was important in the transition of rhythm and blues into soul. He was considered a master showman, and one of the most dynamic and influential singers and performers in R&B and rock 'n' roll history. Gaining fame in his early years as a member of the R&B vocal group Billy Ward and His Dominoes, he went solo in 1957 and recorded over 50 hit singles that spanned R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop and easy listening. This included 16 R&B Top 10 hits, including 6 R&B # 1's. On the Billboard Hot 100, he scored 14 Top 20 Pop hits, 6 of which made it into the Pop Top 10. On September 29, 1975 while headlining a Dick Clark Oldies Concert, he collapsed on stage from what was later determined to be a massive heart attack, and subsequently slipped into a coma slowing awakening over a period of 8 months. He remained semi-comatose for the 9 years preceding his death in 1984, at the age of 49; he was deemed conscious but incapacitated in early June, 1976. Wilson was an inspiration to Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, James Brown and Michael Jackson to name a few. He was one of the most influential artists of his generation.

Charles Kent "Charlie" Wilson (born January 29, 1953), also known as Uncle Charlie, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, producer and the former lead vocalist for The Gap Band. As a solo artist he has been nominated for nine Grammy awards and three NAACP Image Awards, received a 2009 Soul Train Icon Award, and was a recipient of a BMI Icon Award in 2005. In 2009, he was named Billboard magazine's No. 1 Adult R&B Artist, and his song "There Goes My Baby" was named the No. 1 Urban Adult Song for 2009 in Billboard Magazine.

Willie Taylor (born Willie Madison Taylor III; March 29, 1980) is an American singer and songwriter. He is best known as a contestant from MTV's Making the Band 4, where he was chosen by Diddy to be a member and one of the main vocalists of the band Day26 on August 26, 2007.

He is an American-born Taiwanese Mandopop singer-songwriter, rapper, music producer, actor, entrepreneur, and investor. He started his career as a host of Channel V programs. In 2011, Pan was awarded Best Leading Actor in a Television Series for Endless Love (愛∞無限) at the 46th Golden Bell Awards, Taiwan's equivalent to the Emmy Awards.

Harold "Chuck" Willis (January 31, 1928 – April 10, 1958) was an American blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll singer and songwriter. His biggest hits, "C. C. Rider" (1957) and "What Am I Living For" (1958), both reached No.1 on the Billboard R&B chart. He was known as The King of the Stroll for his performance of the 1950s dance the stroll.

Mary Vesta Williams (December 1, 1957 – September 22, 2011) was an American recording artist and songwriter, who performed across genres such as pop, jazz, adult contemporary and R&B. Originally credited as Vesta Williams, she was sometimes simply billed as Vesta beginning in the 1990s. She was known for her four-octave vocal range. She once sang The Star Spangled Banner for the Los Angeles Lakers game opener using all four of those octaves. Although Williams never had any albums certified gold nor any Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, she scored six Top 10 hits on the United States Billboard R&B chart from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s which included "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", "Sweet Sweet Love", "Special", and her 1989 hit and signature song, "Congratulations".

Vanessa Lynn Williams (born March 18, 1963) is an American actress and singer. She is well known for her role as Teri Joseph in the 1997 feature film Soul Food, and the television characters Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty, Renee Perry in Desperate Housewives, and Courtney Paige in The Good Wife. In 1983, Williams became the first African American woman to win the title of Miss America (Miss America 1984). Williams was forced to resign a few weeks prior to the end of her reign on July 22, 1984 due to a scandal surrounding the publication of unauthorized nude photographs in Penthouse magazine. In 2015, 32 years after being crowned during the Miss America 2016 pageant (where she was serving as head judge), Miss America CEO Sam Haskell apologized to Williams for what was said to her during the events of 1984.

Pharrell Lanscilo Williams (born April 5, 1973), also known by his mononym Pharrell (/fəˈrɛl/), is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and fashion designer. Williams and Chad Hugo make up the record production duo the Neptunes, producing soul, hip hop and R&B music. He is also the lead vocalist and drummer of rock, funk and hip hop band N*E*R*D, which he formed with Hugo and childhood friend Shay Haley. He released his first single "Frontin'" in 2003 and followed up with his debut solo album In My Mind in 2006. His second album, Girl, was released on March 3, 2014. It was preceded by the commercially successful single "Happy".

Tenitra Michelle Williams (born July 23, 1980), commonly known as Michelle Williams, is an American recording artist and songwriter. Williams rose to fame in the 2000s as a member of R&B girl group Destiny's Child, one of the best-selling female groups of all time with over 60 million records, of which more than 35 million copies sold with the trio lineup with Williams. During their hiatus, she released her debut solo album Heart to Yours (2002) which topped the US gospel album chart and became the best-selling gospel release of the year. Also in 2002, Billboard, named her the fifth Top Gospel Artist of the year and she received a MOBO Award for "Best Gospel Act". Following this she released Do You Know (2004) which gained her a nomination for "Best Gospel Act" at the 2004 MOBO Awards.

Leonard Charles "Lenny" Williams (born February 16, 1945) is an American singer known for his work in the R&B and soul music genres. During the 1970s, he was the lead vocalist for Tower of Power. As a soloist, he made several hit recordings, including 1977's "Choosing You" and 1978's "Cause I Love You".

Emily Williams (born 8 October 1984) is a New Zealand-born Australian singer and songwriter, who rose to fame on the third season of Australian Idol in 2005, and became runner-up of the season. After Idol, Williams signed with Sony BMG and became a member of all-girl pop group Young Divas, known for their singles "This Time I Know It's For Real" and "Happenin' All Over Again". Following the disbandment of the group in 2008, Williams turned to songwriting and penned hits for many renowned recording artists both in Australia and internationally. The group's debut included the Gold-selling single "808", the international hit "Bring It All to Me", and a third single, "I Do". He is known for his roles as Michael Lee on the HBO original drama series The Wire and as Dixon Wilson on the CW teen drama series 90210. He was also featured in the Adele music video for Hello. His debut album, New York: A Love Story was released on September 30, 2013. The Whitehead Brothers are an American R&B duo from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made up of two brothers, Kenny Whitehead and John Whitehead Jr. They are sons of the late John Whitehead- half of the famed writing, production and singing duo, McFadden & Whitehead. Their writing is mostly handled by both brothers, while the larger part of their work is produced by younger brother, Kenny Whitehead .

McFadden and Whitehead were an American songwriting, production, and recording duo, best known for their signature tune "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now". They wrote and produced some of the most popular R&B hits of the 1970s, and were primarily associated with Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International soul music record label.

Whistle was an American 1980s hip hop and contemporary R&B group that comprised Jazzy Jazz, Kool Doobie, and DJ Silver Spinner. They later brought in Kraze and then Terk after Kool Doobie left the group to go solo. Its biggest hit single as a rap group was "(Nothing Serious) Just Buggin’" in 1986. The group's first two albums, Whistle, released in 1986, and Transformation, released in 1988, were produced by the Kangol Kid from UTFO and DJ Howie Tee. Whistle released a third album, Always and Forever, in 1990, also produced by Kangol Kid, and a fourth album, Get The Love, in 1992.

Choi Hwee-Sung (born February 5, 1982), better known by his stage name Wheesung (Korean: 휘성), is a South Korean R&B singer and record producer. He initially attended the Sun Moon University, under the journalism major but dropped out. War (originally called Eric Burdon and War) is an American funk band from Long Beach, California, known for the hit songs "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine", "Summer", "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "The Cisco Kid", and "The World Is a Ghetto". Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, and reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. War was also subject to many line-up changes over the course of its formation, leaving member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan as the only original member in the current line-up; four other members created a new group called the Lowrider Band.

Willie Maxwell II (born June 7, 1991), better known by his stage name Fetty Wap, is an American hip hop recording artist from Paterson, New Jersey. He rose to prominence with his 2014 single "Trap Queen", which was a sleeper hit that peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 2015, followed by the top ten singles "679" and "My Way". Wap signed with 300 Entertainment in November 2014 and released his self-titled debut studio album in September 2015. He was also chosen as part of the XXL magazine 2015 Freshman Class.

Wang Leehom (born May 17, 1976), sometimes credited as Leehom Wang, is a Chinese-American singer-songwriter, record producer, actor and film director. He is currently based in Taiwan. Formally trained at the Eastman School of Music, Williams College and Berklee College of Music, his musical style is known for fusing Chinese elements (such as Beijing opera, traditional styles of ethnic minorities, Chinese classical orchestra) with hip-hop and R&B. Wang has been active since 1995 and contributed in 25 albums. He is also a four-time winner of Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards, the "Grammys" of Taiwanese music. His concert at the Beijing Bird's Nest on April 14, 2012 was the first solo pop concert to be held at the venue.

The Treniers were an American R&B and jump blues musical group led by identical twins Cliff and Claude Trenier. Total is an American R&B girl group and one of the signature acts of Sean Combs' Bad Boy Records imprint during the 1990s. The group consisted of members Kima Raynor, Keisha Spivey, and Pamela Long. TGT was a supergroup that consisted of R&B singers Tyrese (Tyrese Gibson), Ginuwine (Elgin Baylor Lumpkin) and Tank (Durrell Babbs). TGT is named after the first letter of each of the trio's stage names (T for Tyrese, G for Ginuwine, and T for Tank). The three are close friends and Tyrese was best man at Ginuwine's wedding, but TGT represented their first collaboration. Despite being together as a super group since its formation in 2007, it released its debut album only in August 2013 titled Three Kings on Atlantic Records.

TLC is an American girl group whose repertoire spans R&B hip hop, funk and "urban" soul. TLC was originally composed of lead singer Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and singer Crystal Jones. Jones was replaced by Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas in 1991; whilst Lopes died (and was subsequently not replaced) in 2002. The group was very successful in the 1990s and early 2000s in spite of numerous spats with the law, each other, and the group's record label and management.

The O'Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1958 and originally consisting of Eddie Levert (born June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born August 25, 1943), William Powell (January 20, 1942 – May 26, 1977), Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. The O'Jays made their first chart appearance with "Lonely Drifter" in 1963, but reached their greatest level of success once Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, signed them to their Philadelphia International label in 1972. With Gamble & Huff, the O'Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with "Back Stabbers" (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with "Love Train". Numerous other hits followed through the 1970s and into the 80s and 90s, and The O'Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

The 411 was a four-piece short-lived English female R&B group formed in late 2003. The band formed after a couple of the members sang backup vocals on Lemar's version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". The band took its name after the 1992 Mary J. Blige album What's the 411?. During their time together as a group, they released one studio album Between the Sheets and three top-forty singles before disbanding in 2005.

The group shortened its name to The Gap Band in 1973. After 43 years together, they retired in 2010.

The Pussycat Dolls were an American pop girl group and dance ensemble, founded in Los Angeles, California, by choreographer Robin Antin in 1995 as a burlesque troupe. After attracting media attention, Antin negotiated a record deal with Interscope Geffen A&M Records in 2003 turning the group into a music franchise comprising Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt. The Sugababes are an English pop girl group, formed in 1998 with founding members Siobhán Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan. Following their appearance on The X Factor, JLS signed to Epic Records. Their first two singles "Beat Again" and "Everybody in Love" both went to number one on the UK Singles Chart. The band's self-titled debut album was released on 9 November 2009, and has since sold over 1 million copies in the UK. JLS won the awards for British Breakthrough and British Single ("Beat Again") at the 2010 BRIT Awards. Issues is an American metalcore band formed in Atlanta, Georgia signed to Rise Records.
