This is a comprehensive index of commercial role-playing video games, sorted chronologically by year. Information regarding date of release, developer, publisher, operating system, subgenre and notability is provided where available. The table can be sorted by clicking on the small boxes next to the column headings. This list does not include roguelikes, MUDs or MMORPGs. It does include action RPGs and tactical RPGs.

Video game genres are used to organize video games based on their gameplay interaction rather than visual or narrative differences. A video game genre is defined by a set of gameplay challenges and are classified independent of their setting or game-world content, unlike other works of fiction such as films or books. For example, a shooter game is still a shooter game, regardless of whether it takes place in a fantasy world or in outer space.

A role-playing video game (commonly referred to as role-playing game or RPG, and in the past was also known as computer role-playing game or CRPG) is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a main character (or several adventuring party members) immersed in some well-defined world. Many role-playing video games have origins in pen-and-paper role-playing games (such as Dungeons & Dragons) and use much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. Other major similarities with pen-and-paper games include developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. The electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike, dungeon crawler video game created by indie game developer Red Hook Studios. The game, presently in Early Access for personal computers, is expected to have a full release in January 19, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux computers, with a release for PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita consoles a few months later.

Captain Forever is the name for both a series of space shooter games by Australian developer Jarred "Farbs" Woods and the first iteration of the series. Its name stems from both its development process, with new versions of the game being continuously developed and released and its endless gameplay. There are four games in the series, the first of which is free and supporters, for a one time fee of $9, may gain access to any future sequels released without being required to make any extra payments.

Hand of Fate is an action role-playing video game developed by Defiant Development. The game was released for Linux, Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 17, 2015. A PlayStation Vita version was announced but ultimately cancelled due to development issues.

Road Not Taken is an independent video game developed by Spry Fox for PlayStation 4, PC and Mac. In a take of the Robert Frost poem of the same name, the game is described as being about life's surprises, both positive and negative.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a remake of The Binding of Isaac developed by Nicalis and designed by Edmund McMillen. The game was released on November 4, 2014, and is available on Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, with the Xbox One, New Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U versions released on July 23, 2015 in North America. It was also released for New Nintendo 3DS in Japan on October 28, 2015, and for the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS in Europe on October 29. Players control a crying naked child named Isaac or other unlockable characters. The game's title and plot were inspired by the Biblical story of the Binding of Isaac. According to McMillen, the game touches on themes including religion, children, and mothers.

Dungeon of the Endless is a roguelike-like, tower defense game developed by Amplitude Studios and released in October 2014 for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X systems, August 2015 for iOS devices, and with a planned Xbox One release in 2015. It is their second game of their loosely connected Endless series, which includes Endless Space and Endless Legend.

Invisible, Inc. (originally named Incognita) is a turn-based tactics, stealth video game incorporating elements of roguelike gameplay, developed by Canadian independent studio Klei Entertainment. In the game, the player acts as the remote operator for an espionage agency that has come under attack from multinational corporations, and directs agents in covert missions, acquiring resources and support in order to enable relocation of the agency's computer system to a safe haven within a limited amount of time.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a 2015 independent video game developed by Brace Yourself Games. The game takes fundamental elements of a roguelike dungeon exploration game, and adds a beat-matching rhythm game set to Danny Baranowsky's soundtrack using the Multifeature Beat tracker; the player's actions are most effective when moving the character set to the beat of the current song and are impaired when they miss a beat, so it is necessary to learn the rhythmic patterns that the various creatures follow. The mixed-genre game includes the ability to import custom music, and the option to use a dance pad instead of traditional controllers or the keyboard.

Tower of Guns is a roguelike Single-player first-person shooter video game developed by Terrible Posture Games. It features levels that are randomly created from a pool of possible elements, making each playthrough unique.

Risk of Rain is a platform video game incorporating roguelike elements, developed by an indie two-student team from the University of Washington under the name Hopoo Games. The game, initially a student project, was funded through a Kickstarter campaign to improve the title, and was published by Chucklefish Games to Microsoft Windows systems in November 2013. A PlayStation Vita port was announced in February 2014. Mac OS X and Linux versions premiered as part of a Humble Bundle in October 28, 2014.

Rogue Legacy is a 2013 platform game with roguelike elements developed by Cellar Door Games. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, Linux, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Xbox One.

Don't Starve is a 2013 action-adventure video game with survival and roguelike elements, developed and published by the Canadian indie company Klei Entertainment. The game was initially released via Valve's Steam software for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux on April 23, 2013. A PlayStation 4 port became available the following year (with PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 versions released on September 2014 and June 2015 respectively), and further versions for Xbox One, iOS and mobile phones are under consideration. Downloadable content titled Reign of Giants was released on April 30, 2014, and a multiplayer expansion called Don't Starve Together became free for existing users on June 3, 2015.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a top-down, space ship simulator created by indie developer Subset Games. In the game, the player controls the crew of a single spacecraft, holding critical information to be delivered to an allied fleet eight sectors away, while being pursued by a large rebel fleet. The player must guide the spacecraft over eight sectors, each with planetary systems and events procedurally generated in a roguelike fashion, while facing against rebel and other hostile forces, recruiting new crew, and outfitting and upgrading their ship. Combat takes place in pausable real time, and if the ship is destroyed or all of its crew lost, the game ends, requiring the player to restart with a new ship.

The Binding of Isaac is a 2011 independent video game designed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl, initially released for Microsoft Windows; the game was later ported for OS X, and Linux operating systems. The game's title and plot were inspired by the Biblical story of the Binding of Isaac. After his mother receives a message from God demanding the life of her son as proof of her faith, Isaac flees into the monster-filled basement of their home, where he must fight to survive. Players control Isaac or one of six other unlockable characters through a procedurally generated dungeon in a roguelike manner, fashioned after those of The Legend of Zelda, defeating monsters in real-time combat while collecting items and power-ups to defeat bosses and eventually Isaac's mom.

Spelunky is an open source indie platform video game created by Derek Yu and released as freeware for Microsoft Windows. It was remade for the Xbox 360 in 2012, with ports to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and then back to Microsoft Windows. The player controls a spelunker who explores a series of caves while collecting treasure, saving damsels, fighting enemies and dodging traps. The first public release was on December 21, 2008. The source code of the 2008 Windows version was released on December 25, 2009. An enhanced version for Xbox Live Arcade was released on July 4, 2012. The enhanced edition was also released on PC on August 8, 2013 and for PlayStation 3 on August 27 and 28, 2013 and for PlayStation 4 on October 7, 2014. A Chrome OS version of the game was made as well, titled Spelunky HTML5

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space is an indie roguelike computer game developed by the company Digital Eel. It is the sequel to the game Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. Similar to its predecessor, the game lets players explore a fictional region of the Milky Way galaxy called "The Purple Void" as an expeditionary, a research scientist, or a space pirate. Weird Worlds was released for Microsoft Windows on November 4, 2005 by Digital Eel and Shrapnel Games. A Macintosh port was released on April 26, 2006. An iPad port was released January 5, 2010 and an Android version was released on March 20, 2013, both by Astraware Limited. An updated Macintosh port for OS X 10.9 Mavericks (or greater) that brought the Mac version up to date with the PC version was released on November 20, 2014 by Digital Eel.

Strange Adventures In Infinite Space (SAIS) is a hybrid space roguelike computer game, and the first of its type. It was created by the independent game development group Digital Eel. In the game players explore a "plausibly implausible" (fictional) region of the Milky Way galaxy called The Purple Void.

ToeJam & Earl is an action video game developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions and published by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis video game console. Released in 1991, it centers on the titular ToeJam and Earl—alien rappers who have crash-landed on Earth. As they attempt to escape the planet, players assume the role of either character and collect pieces of their wrecked spacecraft. ToeJam & Earl's design was heavily influenced by the role-playing video game Rogue, and took from it such features as the random generation of levels and items. It references and parodies 1980s and early 90s urban culture and is set to a funk soundtrack.

Slash'EM (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack - Extended Magic) is a variant of the roguelike game NetHack that offers extra features, monsters, and items. Several of its novel features, such as the Monk class, "conducts" (voluntary challenges), and the Sokoban levels, have been reincorporated into NetHack.

99 Levels to Hell is a sidescroller roguelike action video game created by ZaxisGames.[1] The game has 100 levels which are randomly generated, and they are divided into 10 sections of 10 levels each. Death in a section sends players back to the beginning of the section rather than the beginning of the entire game.[2] In the game, players assume the role of a wizard and start off with a shotgun until they can find better means such as laser weapons or magic.[3]

The Guided Fate Paradox (神様と運命革命のパラドクス, Kamisama to Unmei Kakumei no Paradox?) is a dungeon crawler role-playing video game developed and published by Nippon Ichi Software for the PlayStation 3. It was released in Japan on January 24, 2013, Europe on October 28, 2013 and North America on November 5, 2013. The game is described as being a spiritual successor to NIS's earlier PSP title Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman. A sequel, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum, was released September 25, 2014, in Japan, March 17, 2015, in North America, and March 20, 2015, in Europe.

Sword of the Stars: The Pit (sometimes shortened to SotS: The Pit) is a science fiction video game developed by Kerberos Productions. It is set in the universe of the game Sword of the Stars and is self-published through funding from an Indiegogo campaign. It was released on GamersGate on February 21, 2013 and released on steam on March 8, 2013. Versions for Xbox 360, Android and iOS are planned.

Ultima Ratio Regum (Latin for the last argument of kings) is a roguelike created by Mark R Johnson. It was started in 2011 and is intended to be a ten-year project. The game takes place in a procedurally generated world around the time of the scientific revolution. It is about "uncovering an intellectual conspiracy to rewrite history in the most culturally, religiously and socially detailed procedural world ever generated", and the game's core technical objective is "nothing short of the procedural generation of culture".

Tales of Maj'Eyal (also known as ToME) is an open source roguelike video game created by Nicolas Casalini ("DarkGod"), with graphics by Assen Kanev ("Rexorcorum") and Raymond Gaustadnes ("Shockbolt"). It is based upon Casalini's earlier game Tales of Middle Earth, which in turn is based upon Angband. Development of ToME 4 started in 2009, and the first formal release occurred in 2012.

Dungeons of Dredmor is a roguelike indie game released on July 13, 2011 by Gaslamp Games. The game features tile-based graphics. A DLC release for the game entitled "Realm of the Diggle Gods" was also released later that year. A second DLC called "You Have To Name The Expansion Pack" was released on June 5, 2012. A third DLC called "Conquest of the Wizardlands" was released on August 1, 2012. The game has extensive support for user created modifications.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman, known as Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku (絶対ヒーロー改造計画, Zettai Hīrō Kaizō Keikaku?, lit. "Absolute Hero Modding Project") in Japan, is a tactical role-playing video game for the PlayStation Portable. The story follows the exploits of the silent Main Character, who becomes a hero called the Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger after the previous Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger is killed. The new Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger must train to become strong enough to defeat the evil demon general Darkdeath Evilman and rescue the world’s prophesized savior, a super-powered baby called "Super Baby".

100 Rogues is a roguelike role-playing video game developed by Dinofarm Games and published by Fusion Reactions for iOS and Ouya.

Brogue is a roguelike computer video game created by Brian Walker. It has been in development since 2009. As in its predecessor Rogue, the goal of Brogue is for the player (represented by the character @) to descend to the 26th floor of the Dungeons of Doom, retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, and return to the surface. This task is complicated by the presence of monsters and the labyrinthine generation of the dungeon. Brogue has been called "sadistic", "streamlined", and its use of ASCII graphics has been highly praised.

Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns, released in Japan as Gōma Reifu Den Izuna Ni (降魔霊符伝イヅナ 弐?), is a dungeon crawler video game developed by Ninja Studio and published in Japan by Success and in North America by Atlus for the Nintendo DS handheld game console. It is the sequel to Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja and was released in Japan on November 29, 2007 and in North America on July 22, 2008.

A version of the game for Android and iOS was released in Japan on December 12, 2013, and worldwide on May 28, 2014.

Dragon Quest: Shōnen Yangus to Fushigi no Dungeon (ドラゴンクェスト　少年ヤンガスと不思議のダンジョン, lit. "Dragon Quest: Young Yangus and the Mystery Dungeon"?) is a prequel/spin-off to Dragon Quest VIII. It is part of the Mystery Dungeon series and contains randomly generated dungeons.

Dwarf Fortress (officially called Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress) is a part construction and management simulation, part roguelike, indie video game created by Tarn and Zach Adams. Freeware and in development since 2002, its first alpha version was released in 2006 and it received attention for being a two-member project surviving solely on donations. The primary game mode is set in a procedurally generated fantasy world in which the player indirectly controls a group of dwarves, and attempts to construct a successful and wealthy underground fortress. Critics praised its complex, emergent gameplay but had mixed reactions to its difficulty. The game influenced Minecraft and was selected among other games to be featured in the Museum of Modern Art to show the history of video gaming in 2012.

Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, known in Japan as Gōma Reifu Den Izuna (降魔霊符伝イヅナ?, lit. "Devil-conquering Soul Talisman Legend Izuna") and in Europe as Izuna: The Legend of the Ninja, is a Nintendo DS dungeon crawler game developed by Success and published by Atlus USA in the United States and by 505 Games in Europe. It was followed by a sequel, Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns, in 2007.

Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal (TAO魔物の塔と魔法卵, Tao: Mamono no Tō to Mahō no Tamago?, lit. Tao: The Goblin's Tower and the Magical Egg) is a Nintendo DS video game developed by Konami.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (ポケモン不思議のダンジョン 青の救助隊, Pokemon Fushigi no Danjon Ao no Kyūjotai?) and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (ポケモン不思議のダンジョン 赤の救助隊, Pokemon Fushigi no Danjon Aka no Kyūjotai?) are a matched pair of Pokémon games for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, respectively. These two games were developed by Chunsoft and published by Nintendo. It was the last Pokémon-themed video game to be released on the Game Boy Advance. The two versions are mostly identical, with the Blue version taking advantage of the dual-screen features and increased graphical capabilities of the Nintendo DS. The game has six Pokémon exclusive to each version.

The Tower of Druaga (ドルアーガの塔, Doruāga no Tō?) is a maze-based action role-playing arcade game released by Namco in 1984. It is the first game in the Babylonian Castle Saga series, inspired by Sumerian and Babylonian mythology, including the Epic of Gilgamesh and Tower of Babel.

The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigi no Dungeon (ザ・ナイトメア・オブ・ドルアーガ 不思議のダンジョン) is a role-playing video game developed by Arika and Chunsoft and published by Namco in 2004 exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 2. It is the sequel to The Tower of Druaga and the eighth game in Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon (Fushigi no Dungeon in Japanese) series.

TwinBee (ツインビー?) is a video game series composed primarily of cartoon-themed vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up games produced by Konami that were released primarily in Japan. The series originated as a coin-operated video game simply titled TwinBee in 1985, which was followed by several home versions and sequels. The character designs of almost every game in the series since Detana!! TwinBee in 1991 were provided by Japanese animator Shuzilow HA (Jujiro Hamakawa), who also planned and supervised most of the subsequent installments in the TwinBee series. The series also inspired a radio drama adaptation that lasted three seasons in Japan, as well as an anime adaptation.

Doom is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by id Software. The series focuses on the exploits of an unnamed space marine operating under the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation), who fights hordes of demons and the undead in order to survive.

DoomRL (or Doom, the Roguelike) is a roguelike video game for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, whose setting is based on the first-person shooters Doom and Doom II. It was created by Kornel Kisielewicz using Free Pascal and SDL.

(released as Dark Cloud 2 in North America) is a 2002 action role-playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. It was released in Japan in November 2002, in North America in February 2003, and in Europe in September 2003. The game is a spiritual sequel to the 2000 game Dark Cloud, with the same basic game mechanics (action role-playing combined with elements of city-building games), but features mainly different characters and an unrelated plot.

Fushigi no Dungeon: Fūrai no Shiren 2: Oni Shūrai! Shiren-jō! (不思議のダンジョン 風来のシレン2 鬼襲来!シレン城!, lit. "Mystery Dungeon Coming Onslaught of Demons Shiren 2! Shiren castle!"?) is one of the few role playing games made for the Nintendo 64. The game was an entry in the Mystery Dungeon series, and released only in Japan in 2000.

Falcon's Eye is a version of the computer game NetHack which introduces isometric graphics and mouse control. Falcon's Eye has been praised for improving NetHack's visuals and audio to an almost commercial level and has been noted as among some of the best free games available by Linux Journal.

Dark Cloud (Japanese: ダーククラウド, Hepburn: Dāku Kuraudo?) is a 2000 action role-playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. Originally intended as a launch title for the PlayStation 2, the game was ultimately released in Japan in December 2000, in North America in May 2001, and in Europe in September 2001. In 2015, the game was made available for the PlayStation 4 through the PlayStation Network. A sequel with an unrelated plot, Dark Chronicle (released as Dark Cloud 2 in North America), was released in Japan in 2002 and worldwide in 2003.

Torneko: The Last Hope, known as Dragon Quest Characters: Torneko no Daibōken 2 - Fushigi no Dungeon (ドラゴンクエスト・キャラクターズ トルネコの大冒険2 ～不思議のダンジョン～?, "Dragon Quest Characters: Torneko's Great Adventure 2 - Mystery Dungeon") in Japan, is a role-playing video game for the PlayStation. The game was co-developed by Chunsoft and Matrix Software and published by Enix in both Japan and North America in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

Azure Dreams, released in Japan as Other Life: Azure Dreams (アザーライフ アザードリームス, Azā Raifu Azā Dorīmusu?), is a PlayStation video game developed by Konami and was originally released in Japan on November 13, 1997. A stripped down version was later released on the Game Boy Color. A semi-sequel, Tao's Adventure: Curse of the Demon Seal, was released on the Nintendo DS in 2005.

The Chocobo is a fictional creature from the Final Fantasy video game series made by Square and Square Enix (since 2003). The creature is a flightless bird, with a resemblance to galliformes and ratites, capable of being ridden and otherwise used by player characters during gameplay. Chocobos first appeared in Final Fantasy II and have been featured in almost all subsequent Final Fantasy games, as well as making cameo appearances in numerous other games. A spin-off Chocobo series featuring chocobos has also been created.

Tales of Maj'Eyal (also known as ToME) is an open source roguelike video game created by Nicolas Casalini ("DarkGod"), with graphics by Assen Kanev ("Rexorcorum") and Raymond Gaustadnes ("Shockbolt"). It is based upon Casalini's earlier game Tales of Middle Earth, which in turn is based upon Angband. Development of ToME 4 started in 2009, and the first formal release occurred in 2012.

Baroque (バロック Barokku) is a role-playing video game developed by and published Sting Entertainment, released in Japan for the Sega Saturn on May 21, 1998. It was ported for PlayStation on October 28, 1999, also released only in Japan. A remake version was for PlayStation 2 and Wii and was released in June 28, 2008 and March 13, 2008, respectively. Atlus announced that they would release the game on the North American and was scheduled for release in the United States on March 18, 2008 for the PlayStation 2 and Wii. Atlus USA eventually released both versions of the game on April 8, 2008. On December 28, 2012, Sting released it for the Apple iOS platform. Rising Star Games released in Europe on July 18, 2008 for PS2 and August 22, 2008 for the Wii.

Slash'EM (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack - Extended Magic) is a variant of the roguelike game NetHack that offers extra features, monsters, and items. Several of its novel features, such as the Monk class, "conducts" (voluntary challenges), and the Sokoban levels, have been reincorporated into NetHack.

The Chocobo series is a collection of video games published by Square, and later by Square Enix, featuring a recurring creature from the Final Fantasy series, the Chocobo, as the protagonist. The creature is a large and normally flightless bird which first appeared in Final Fantasy II and has been featured in almost all subsequent Final Fantasy games, as well as making cameo appearances in numerous other games. The Chocobo series of video games contains over 20 titles for video game consoles, mobile phones, and online platforms. These games include installments of the Mystery Dungeon series of roguelike video games, racing games, adventure games, and minigame collections. Although the various games of the series have different game styles and are generally unrelated except by their inclusion of a Chocobo as the main character, Square Enix considers them to be a distinct series.

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (不思議のダンジョン２　風来のシレン Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Fūrai no Shiren) is a graphical roguelike by Chunsoft. It is the second videogame in the Mystery Dungeon series, and the first game in the series to feature all original characters. It was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1995, and has subsequently been ported to the Game Boy and Nintendo DS.

The Sorcerer's Cave, a game of exploration, magic, and adventure, is a fantasy board/card game designed by Terence Peter Donnelly and first published in 1978. It was inspired by the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. The game can be played solo or competitively, with player(s) controlling a party of adventurers who explore a multi-level dungeon which is randomly generated by drawing area cards from a deck. The party will encounter monsters, allies and treasures, and will ultimately escape with their riches or find their doom.

Angband is a dungeon-crawling roguelike computer game derived from Umoria. It is based on the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, in which Angband is the fortress of Morgoth. The current version of Angband is available for all major operating systems, including Unix, Windows, Mac OS X, and Android.

World of Arch, (WoA), is a roguelike video game, designed by I.A. Jääskeläinen, and released in 1994.

Ancient Domains of Mystery, or ADOM, is a roguelike video game by Thomas Biskup first released in 1994. The player's aim is to stop the forces of Chaos that invade the world of Ancardia.

Several different editions of the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fantasy role-playing game have been produced since 1974. The current publisher of D&D, Wizards of the Coast, produces new materials only for the most current edition of the game. Many D&D fans, however, continue to play older versions of the game and some third-party companies continue to publish materials compatible with these older editions.

Eye of the Beholder is a role-playing video game for computers and video game consoles developed by Westwood Associates. It was published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. in 1990 for the MS-DOS operating system and later ported to the Amiga, the Sega CD, Game Boy Advance and the SNES. The Sega CD version features an exclusive soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro. A port to the Atari Lynx handheld was developed by NuFX in 1993, but never officially released.

Dungeon Hack is a role-playing video game developed by DreamForge Intertainment and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) for the PC DOS and NEC PC-9801 in 1993. The game is based in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons world of Forgotten Realms.

Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon (トルネコの大冒険 不思議のダンジョン, Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon?) is the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series. This installment features Torneko (or Taloon, as he was known in North America), the merchant from Dragon Warrior IV. The game involves Torneko adventuring around in the "Mystery Dungeon" in search of items.

UnReal World is a roguelike survival freeware (shareware before 2013) computer game set in Iron Age Finland. The first version of the game was released in 1992, but gets regular updates to this day. The latest update occurred in April 2015.

Ragnarok is a freeware roguelike video game for DOS, created by Norsehelm Productions from 1992 to 1995, also going by the name Valhalla in its European release. It is distinct from many other roguelikes in having a graphical interface, a historical/mythological setting, set quests, the ability to change classes, and the ability to permanently change one's race by polymorphing. Mission: Thunderbolt is a roguelike computer game with a futuristic storyline. It was originally developed and released on DEC mainframes as Doomsday 2000, a four-part game, and later ported to both Mac OS and Windows. Mission: Thunderbolt is part 1 of the Jaunt Trooper series and was released on both Mac OS and Windows. Part 2, Mission: Firestorm, was only released for Mac OS. The game was one of the first commercially released roguelikes. It put a graphical front end and a full set of sounds in place of the ASCII text traditional to roguelikes. It was also unique in the sheer number of actions/interactions possible. Being closed source, many mysteries of the game were never fully resolved.

Fatal Labyrinth, titled Shi no Meikyuu: Labyrinth of Death (死の迷宮?) in Japan, is a role-playing video game produced by Sega. Originally available exclusively on the Sega Meganet multiplayer gaming service in 1990, it was later remade for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991. The game appears in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game was released on September 13, 2010 for Steam.

The Silmarillion /sɪlməˈrɪlɨən/ is a collection of J. R. R. Tolkien's mythopoeic works, edited and published posthumously by his son, Christopher Tolkien, in 1977, with assistance from Guy Gavriel Kay, who later became a noted fantasy writer. The Silmarillion, along with J. R. R. Dragon Crystal (ドラゴンクリスタル?) is a 1990 video game developed and published by Sega for their Game Gear and Master System. The game is similar to and shares assets with Fatal Labyrinth, which was also released around that time.

Larn is a roguelike computer game authored by Noah Morgan in 1986 for the UNIX operating system. Morgan's original version of Larn remains part of the NetBSD games collection.

Island of Kesmai was an early commercial online game in the MUD genre, innovative in its use of roguelike pseudo-graphics. It is considered a major forerunner of modern MMORPGs.

The Dungeon Revealed is a popular dungeon crawl computer game created by John Raymonds and published by Woodrose Editions in 1987. A demo and shareware version of the game entitled The Dungeon of Doom were released in 1986 and 1987 respectively to promote the commercial release of "The Dungeon Revealed" which came in 1987. Both were released for Mac OS, and were compatible with versions as late as System 7. "The Dungeon Revealed" can still be played with Mac OS 10.4.10 in Classic (Mac OS 9.2.2) but suffers from an absence of sound. "The Dungeon of Doom" (the demo) and shareware releases, were not 32-bit clean and thus not compatible with Mac OS 7.5 and up.

Diablo is an action role-playing hack and slash video game developed by Blizzard North and released by Blizzard Entertainment on December 31, 1996.

Moria is a roguelike computer game based heavily on J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. The game's objective is to kill a Balrog, presumably Durin's Bane, deep within the Mines of Moria. A later port of Moria called Umoria (UNIX Moria) inspired the Angband roguelike game. This game influenced the preliminary design of Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin is a video game for the Intellivision video game console and the Mattel Aquarius computer system. This game was a licensed Dungeons & Dragons adaptation.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was an Intellivision game, one of the first Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games to be officially licensed by TSR, Inc.. It was later retitled to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain to distinguish it from the sequel, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin. It was also the first Intellivision cartridge to use more than 4K of ROM.

NetHack is a single-player roguelike video game originally released in 1987 with ASCII graphics. It is a descendant of an earlier game called Hack (1985), which is a descendant of Rogue (1980). Comparing it with Rogue, Engadget's Justin Olivetti wrote that took its exploration aspect and "made it far richer with an encyclopedia of objects, a larger vocabulary, a wealth of pop culture mentions, and a puzzler's attitude." In 2000, Salon described it as "one of the finest gaming experiences the computing world has to offer."

Hack is a 1985 roguelike video game that introduced shops as gameplay elements and expanded available monsters, items, and spells. It later became the basis for NetHack.

Sword of Fargoal is a 1982 video game by Jeff McCord, published by Epyx. The November 1996 anniversary issue of Computer Gaming World listed Sword of Fargoal as #147 on the "Top 150 Best Video Games of All Time."

Telengard is a 1982 role-playing dungeon crawler video game developed by Daniel Lawrence and published by Avalon Hill. The player explores a dungeon, fights monsters with magic, and avoids traps in real time without any set mission other than surviving. Lawrence first wrote the game as DND, a 1976 version of Dungeons & Dragons for the DECsystem-10 mainframe computer. He continued to develop DND at Purdue University as a hobby, rewrote the game for the Commodore PET 2001 after 1978, and ported it to Apple II+, TRS-80, and Atari 800 platforms before Avalon Hill found the game at a convention and licensed it for distribution. Its Commodore 64 release was the most popular. Reviewers noted Telengard '​s similarity to Dungeons and Dragons. RPG historian Shannon Appelcline noted the game as one of the first professionally produced computer role-playing games, and Gamasutra '​s Barton considered Telengard consequential in what he deemed "The Silver Age" of computer role-playing games preceding the golden age of the late 1980s. Some of the game's dungeon features, such as altars, fountains, teleportation cubes, and thrones, were adopted by later games such as Tunnels of Doom.

Rogue is a dungeon crawling video game first developed by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman around 1980. It was a favorite on college Unix systems in the early to mid-1980s, in part due to the procedural generation of game content. Rogue popularized dungeon crawling as a video game trope, leading others to develop a class of derivatives known collectively as "roguelikes". For example, it directly inspired Hack, which in turn led to NetHack. Roguelikes have since influenced commercial games outside the genre, such as Diablo.

Beneath Apple Manor is an early roguelike game released by Don Worth for microcomputers, which had a Lo-Res Apple release in 1978 (through The Software Factory) and high-res multi-platform releases in 1982 and 1983 (through Quality Software). The goal is to obtain a Golden Apple on the bottom floor of the dungeon. There are 10 rooms per level in the low-res version, and 5 in the high-res version. The high-res versions may be played in low-res/text mode, thereby gaining this increase in level size. It is notable for being the first commercial role playing game developed and released for a home computer as opposed to a mainframe computer.
